It’s New Year in the West Country town of Abbeyford and Detective Sergeant Kate Redman is trying to cope with her workload, her relationship with her former DCI and with the discovery of a frozen body at the bottom of a local ravine. A tragic accident? A suicide? Or murder? Kate has enough to contend with when it comes to the recent recruitment of DCI Nicola Weaver who seems determined to prove Kate wrong. But is this a crime and if it is, what does it mean for Kate and her colleagues? Descent is a new novella in the bestselling Kate Redman Mysteries series, by crime writer Celina Grace, author of Hushabye and Pulse. Praise for Celina Grace from and Goodreads reviewers "The gradual crescendo of action and pace remorselessly increases..." "Love Kate. She is human, does not always make good choices just like us." “At last, a mystery that delivers…I found this novel superb because I got all I needed to know and none of what I didn’t.” “…a gripping detective story but the main character engages you, and as well as wanting to know how the mystery turns out you want to learn more about her too.” “…amazing book, read it front to back in one visit, couldn`t help myself…” “…the most enjoyable book I have so far read since the 'low cost electronic revolution' which has been sweeping my reading habits for the last couple of years! Thoroughly recommended.” “This was my introduction to the author, and I'm so glad I discovered the book. Well-written and a real page turner.” “I was awake till the early hours to finish it !! I really enjoyed it and the characters in it so I'm pleased I also have the sequel downloaded to read at some point. I know it should be great.” “Attention to detail and great character building coupled with a mystery that keeps you guessing are all the ingredients that make me keep reading till the early hours of the morning.” "Celina Grace has done it again, she compels you from page to page and chapter to chapter, a great, riveting read..." "I found it difficult to put down and was completely distracted from all the other things I should have been doing with my time." "This is a great series that I couldn't put down and grabbed the next book right away at 1 a.m. to keep reading."

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a review. Overall, I really liked the book. It’s about detective Kate Redmond working on a mysterious death. A young woman’s body is found at the bottom of a ravine shortly after Christmas and Kate gets the case. I do think that there is a slight inconsistency in the book. Kate enters the interview room to question one of the suspects. Bear in mind that the suspect has been read their rights and that there is a Solicitor in the room. So, Kate uses a very unorthodox way to get the suspect to confess. As she is doing this, the Solicitor says nothing. What Solicitor would knowingly allow their client to answer to that kind of a question without warning them they do not have to answer and or not to answer!
Since her boyfriend DCI Anderton has been suspended, the office is waiting for a new DCI. They get one in the person of Nicola Weaver. Like many, but not all female managers, she has a chip in her shoulder. She thinks that she has to be cold, aloof and strictly by the book in order to compete with the guys. She upends everything that DCI Anderton put in pace. This makes it very had for the team to solve this case.
As usual, I thought that I had things figured out. I was wrong. This is a really good novella. Interesting and easy to read. You should definitely buy it.

Descent A Kate Redman Mystery Novella The Kate Redman Mysteries Celina Grace 9781545049747 Books Reviews

I love the Kate Redman series. The characters are very real and I am constantly learning more about them with each book. The stories are very well developed, not predictable. They keep me guessing until the very end.
A very enjoyable book. I almost didn't get it because I don't usually enjoy short stories. However this was a continuation of the Kate Redman saga. Most of the characters were the same. Sort of like a family. I will go back and read book 3 next. Thanks Celina!
Another hit in a great series. Can't wait for the next. Enjoying the furtherance of the Kate-Atherton relationship.
Keep up the great work!
Descent is another excellent story in the Kate Redman series. Celina is an excellent writer. I look forward to the continued development of Kate and Anderton’s relationship!

Read the whole book—it will be well worth the time!
Loved this very short book about a case solved by Kate Redman. I have really enjoyed the other longer books in the series, and even though this one was short, it was not skimped. Kate and her office buddies have to get used to their new superior, who is bossy and seems to have taken a special dislike to Kate. Her rude manner has taken most of the pleasure the little group enjoyed under Anderton's leadership. However they are still on top of their work and close the case with no trouble.
In this installment of the Kate Redman series, Kate and the team are introduced to the interim DCI - a woman who is just a bit too snarky. She seems to take an instant dislike to Kate.

When a dead body is found at the base of a cliff in a local wooded park, the detectives and medical examiner attempt to find out if this was a fall, a suicide or a murder. With the frozen earth, it's difficult to find any evidence.

There are several people on the list of possible suspects, but finding the truth and keeping the DCI from closing the case makes the investigation even more difficult.

If you haven't read any of Celina Grace's books, I strongly recommend this series. You won't be disappointed!
When a woman's body is found at the bottom of a cliff as soon as everyone returns to work following the New Year's holiday, it's DS Kate Redman's job to find out if it was an accidental fall or murder. At the same time she has to deal with an abrasive new DCI who seems to be particularly antagonistic towards Kate. The entire unit is no longer working as smoothly as before. Kate's relationship with Anderton, the former DCI, is now common knowledge, but Kate is still trying to manage living between two places. As usual, Kate's intuition is a great aid when seeing the true picture emerge from all the separate pieces of the puzzle.

It seems trite to say Celina Grace improves with every new book. Her character development and plotting are as strong as ever. The events flow seamlessly to a surprising conclusion. I highly recommend this series. Even though this is a stand alone story a greater appreciation of the series will be gained by reading them in order and seeing the growth of Kate Redman as both a detective and a woman.
